What Am I Up to Now? 05 April 2008
I am still working on my thesis, which is entitled "Origin and Composition of the Light-Toned Layered Deposits in Iani Chaos, Mars." I am also still working on the hydrogen dust cloud cooling project, and this summer I will be working at the University of Washington on star-forming regions in M31 (known to most of you as the Andromeda Galaxy, seen below).

I am currently working on my thesis topic, looking at sulfates and phosphates on Mars, which can tell us about the history of water on the planet (where, when, how much, etc). The picture below is sunset from Gusev Crater (source: NASA).

What Was I Up To? 15 August 2006
I spent this summer working for the University of Washington in the Astronomy department studying the lithium content of symbiotic stars and at the Applied Physics Lab studying moisture events in the Antarctic Dry Valleys (pictured below; picture from the NSF) and the Atacama Desert. These locales can be used as terrestrial analogs for Mars in the field of astrobiology, hence my interest. These areas have no moisture content in the soil to speak of for years and have no signs of life. However, when a moisture event passes through, we see microbial life appear in the soil, likely lying dormant until the water appears for them to utilize.

Right now I am working on calibrating the m1 index for high-metallicity stars via Strömgren photometry of the old, metal-rich open cluster NGC 6791 (see picture below). When the final paper is written, it will be posted on this website. Not much interesting to say about this topic...perhaps my next endeavour will be more so.

I am also yet again the head of space track programming for Norwescon for...what is it now, the fourth year in a row? It's a wonderful experience, and I'm happy to have been asked to do it again. Must be doing something right if they keep asking me back.  :)  So, if you are into science/sci-fi and will be in Seattle over Easter weekend, drop by and check the convention out!
